  8. Mario Vargas Llosa has outdone himself in nonfiction. The plot: a
  9. distinguished South American writer enters politics, though he
  10. considers it a "dirty kid of thing."  Starting at the top, he
  11. runs for the presidency of his country, beleaguered by guerrilla
  12. skirmishes, food shortages and Andean inflation. The real-life
  13. protagonist: Vargas Llosa. Even before his official April
  14. nomination, the author of The Real Life of Alejandro Mayta
  15. (1986) and eight other novels leads in opinion polls. At a Lima
  16. rally, thousands of supporters enthusiastically cheered his
  17. declaration, "I am the hope for Peru."
